You have heard it many times over, “start with a niche market”, or “zoom in to a smaller niche market”, or something similar. But have you ever wondered what is niche marketing and why it is important for your business? We will answer these 2 questions in this article…

What is Niche Marketing?

If you look it up in the dictionary, the word niche means, “a specialized segment of the market for a particular kind of product or service”. And niche marketing simply refers to a business that promotes or sells a product or service to a specialized segment of a market.

Allow me to give you an example. If you are a photographer, you can target everyone who needs your photography services, like wedding photography, family photography, sports photography, and food photography.

If you are trying to cover everything within the photography industry, from A to Z, you are doing mass marketing.

But if you zoom in, narrow the market, and focus on only one segment of the market, such as wedding photography, that’s niche marketing.

Here’s another example of a niche market…

Weight loss is a mass market. It is a huge market that covers everything. And if you narrow the market to only target cellulite weight loss for women after pregnancy, that’s a niche market.

Can you see the difference right now?

Here’s the next question, why do you want to narrow your market and niche down for your business? Here’s the answer…

Why It is Important to Niche Down for Your Business

There are a few reasons why you want to zoom in and only focus on just a small segment of the market rather than the entire market. And here’s why:

1. Lower Competition

Yes, that’s common sense. When you narrow your target market, so with the competition. And with less competition, it will be easier for you to dominate and become the ‘niche king’ within the segment.

2. Cost and Time Efficiency

That’s right, imagine you want to place an advertisement on Facebook to target an audience within your niche. If you try to target the entire mass market, you will have to pay a lot more for the ad cost.

On the contrary, when you niche down and only target a certain segment within your market, the ad cost will be lowered. Why? Because there are fewer competitors. When fewer people advertise for the same market segment, the cost will be lower.

Don’t get this wrong with branding. Big brands like Coca-Cola, Apple, or McDonald’s are playing a different game. They do mass marketing because they have a bigger budget, and they want to build their brands. Hence, big brands will spend millions just to keep bombarding ads on a certain platform.

3. Price and Profit

Think about how much should you charge for your products or services. If you are a specialist in a niche, you can charge a much higher price than a general product or service.

Just like how a neurosurgeon and a general practitioner, someone who wants to undergo head surgery will consult a neurosurgeon and are willing to pay a premium price. On the contrary, a general practitioner will never charge a high premium because a general practitioner is targeting the mass market, while a neurosurgeon is targeting a specific niche.

Do you get that? If you want to sell your products or services at a premium price, you need to niche down and become a specialist in your market segment. Once you become an expert, people are willing to pay you more for what you deliver.

4. Faster Growth

That’s right, because you are targeting the right target audience, people will engage with your business better. And as a result, you will be able to grow your business faster.

Imagine starting a blog about building a business. If your blog’s topic is too general, it will never gain the traction it needs. On the other hand, if you focus on a niche, such as if the blog is about building an online business using Instagram, you will attract people who want to grow their business on Instagram.

The engagement for your blog’s content with your target audience will be much higher. As a result, Google will rank your blog higher because people love your content. And that’s how your blog will experience a faster growth rate.

It is the same with every business. Unless you have unlimited budget and time, you want to niche down and dominate a smaller market segment before you expand to another niche.

5. Effective Communication

Imagine if you are getting married soon. And you are looking for a wedding photographer for your big day. Are you more likely to respond to ads from a photographer who specializes only in wedding photos, or a photographer that covers everything?

The answer is clear. When you are targeting a niche, your communication and message become clear. You are talking directly to people who are searching or looking for your products or services.

This is why you want to focus on a niche, rather than the entire market.

When you try to approach and target everyone, you are targeting no one. So, ask yourself, who is your target market, and how can you help or serve them better?

Identify your niche so that you can grow your business faster, more effectively, and make more sales.
